Alaska Gov: F the Polar Bears

October 26, 2009 Leave a comment

Sarah Palin’s replacement wants polar bears de-listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act because he wants to drill, baby, drill. Sean Parnell is keeping up the Alaskan Republican-governor tradition of opposing federal protection of polar bears. He says that conservationists are improperly using the act as a way to prevent resourceĀ development. You’re doin’ Sarah proud, Sean. I don’t mean that as a compliment.

As always, this all comes down to money and greed. Apparently, Alaskan governors are far more concerned with exploiting natural resources to keep those oil dividends up for the Alaskan voters, rather than preserving the natural resources that the rest of us cherish (like polar bears!). Until Palin came along, I assumed Alaskans took pride in their vast wilderness and unique ecosystems. Now I know they only care about oil. Prove me wrong, please. I want to believe that polar bears will survive another 50 years, but if major stakeholders like Alaska’s governor aren’t on their side, then I don’t give the bears much of a chance.
