Solid Blog: The Discerning Brute

October 28, 2009 Leave a comment

It’s easy to find good vegan food-based blogs, but I have found it diffucult to find decent blogs that focus on living as a vegan and different vegan issues. Tonight I found a good one. The Discerning Brute posts regularly about environmentally friendly and vegan products, consciousness in modern society, environmental news, and a few recipes here and there. I’ve only begun to explore it, but TDB is obviously treated with professionalism and heart by its creator Joshua Katcher, and it shows. I was impressed to see that Mr. Katcher scored an interview with Davey Havok of AFI, one of my all-time favorite bands. Here is part II, in which Justin and Davey compare meat eating with hedonism.

Alaska Gov: F the Polar Bears

Sarah Palin’s replacement wants polar bears de-listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act because he wants to drill, baby, drill. Sean Parnell is keeping up the Alaskan Republican-governor tradition of opposing federal protection of polar bears. He says that conservationists are improperly using the act as a way to prevent resource development. You’re doin’ Sarah proud, Sean. I don’t mean that as a compliment.

As always, this all comes down to money and greed. Apparently, Alaskan governors are far more concerned with exploiting natural resources to keep those oil dividends up for the Alaskan voters, rather than preserving the natural resources that the rest of us cherish (like polar bears!). Until Palin came along, I assumed Alaskans took pride in their vast wilderness and unique ecosystems. Now I know they only care about oil. Prove me wrong, please. I want to believe that polar bears will survive another 50 years, but if major stakeholders like Alaska’s governor aren’t on their side, then I don’t give the bears much of a chance.

I Eat Food. I’ve been cruising a lot of vegan cooking blogs lately, and this one stuck out as quite strong. Renae posts lots of pictures of ingredients, different stages of the recipe, and finished product food-p*rn. It is more detailed than most blogs, but I appreciate it. I want to make some lentil loaf.
